Michella Maiorana-Basas, Ph.D.

Michella Maiorana-Basas is an  Assistant Professor in the Education Department at Flagler College, St. Augustine, FL. Michella currently serves as the Division of Communicative Disabilities and Deafness Constituent Chair for Deaf Hard of Hearing (through the Council for Exceptional Children) and is an “at large” member of the faculty senate at Flagler College. She has also served as a board member of Hands and Voices, Michigan and is currently a member of the Hands and Voices national organization.

 

Michella completed her doctoral degree in Special Education with a cognate in Literacy and Language at Michigan State University as a fellow of the National Leadership Consortium on Sensory Disabilities (NLCSD). Her dissertation research focused on the content area reading practices of teachers in upper-grade classrooms in signing programs.  Michella was a classroom teacher at The Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind (HSDB) as well as in the Miami-Dade County Public School system.  While at HSDB, Michella completed her Master’s degree in Special Education at the University of Hawai`i at Manoa under the Diverse Pathways to Linguistic and Cultural Competence for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Teachers in Hawai`i scholarship. Michella earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at Flagler College in Deaf Education and Elementary Education.
